National Merit Commended Students

Bacon Academy is proud to announce that three of our seniors have been recognized as National Merit Commended Students.  On Monday, Jillian Snow, Charlotte Galarneau and Benjamin Buyniski were notified of their accomplishment and presented with a certificate from College Board for their performance on the test last fall.  Congratulations on this amazing achievement!

Mock Car Crash

On Thursday October 2nd, juniors and seniors participated in a program designed to help students make good decisions when operating motor vehicles.  The day started with a Mock Crash simulation at the front of the school.  Two damaged vehicles represent the crash scene and five BA students volunteered to participate as actors in the scene. BA is grateful for the partnership with Colchester PD, Colchester Fire, Reliable Auto, Aurora McCarthy Funeral Home and even LifeStar pilots for their contributions and hard work to bring the simulation to life for our students.

Students then participated in a presentation by Steve Emt, a Hebron native, and USA Paralympian to share his message with our students.  He presented as part of the Choices Matter program, sponsored by the CT Department of Transportation, who also provided an interactive program of simulations of impaired operation.  We are grateful for all who contributed to the success of the event for our students.

BA is so proud of two of our own!

As mentor teachers for Long Island Sound through CT Sea Grant, Bacon Academy science teachers Nicole St. George and Jill Levasseur lead professional development for 13 teachers from all over the state and we were accepted.  Last Friday (Sept 12) they hosted a professional development session entitled Pollution Solutions at Bluff Point in Groton.  Activities included storm drain management/clean up, water testing for nitrogen loads in Long Island Sound, seining for Long Island Sound animals, sand sediment studies to look for plastic debris as well as ways to help students reduce their pollution footprint to Long Island Sound.  Two guest speakers were coordinated to join the event - Brian Flannery from DEEP and Mary Ellen Mataleska from Mystic Aquarium - who gave presentations on the history of Bluff Point State Park and microplastics in the marine environment.  Congratulations to Jill and Nikki for a great event and for sharing their expertise!
